House of Hard Bop – Guitarists Jimmy Raney & Doug Raney (1/3)
Three episodes on the theme of bop-guitar, featuring father and son Raney.
Jimmy Raney (1927-1995) worked toghether with Red Norvo, Stan Getz, Bob Brookmeyer, and was part of the orchestras of Artie Shaw and Woody Herman. The New York Times described him as “one of the most gifted and influential postwar jazz guitarists in the world”.
This first episode highlights recordings of Jimmy Raney, Live in Tokyo from 1976, with bassist Sam Jones and drummer Leroy Williams (Xanadu label).
The second episode will be dedicated to Doug Raney (1956-2016), with recordings made for the Steeplechase label. In the third episode we will hear them play together (Stolen Moments on Steeple Chase and Raney ‘81 on Criss Cross.)
