The remaining two movements of String quartet no.3, opus 30, Geza Fri’s Fantasia Tropica, followed by his String quartet no.4 from 1956, a dramatic year marked by the Hungarian uprising. This quartet reflects this intense and dramatic time. Henk Bading’s String quartet no.4 from 1966 is written in a 31-tone scale, using 31 microtones within an octave instead of the traditional 12 semitones or seven whole tones.
Finally, we will hear 3 of the 4 movements from Lex van Delden’s String quartet no.3, opus 106 from 1979, subtitled ‘Willink-vierluik’. This composition was specially commissioned by coffee merchant Fopke Fopma for the opening of a retrospective exhibition of the works of Carel Willink at the Stedelijk Museum in 1980.
