Evert Jan Nagtegaal and the Art of Song
Arnold Schönberg (1874-1951): loved, hated, idolised, demonised. Part 2
The Gurrelieder takes a special place in Arnold Schönberg’s song repertoire. The Gurrelieder is a grand cantata for five vocal soloists, a spoken voice, a choir, and a symphony orchestra. Schönberg based his work on the poems of the Danish writer Jens Peter Jacobsen. The Danish text has been translated into German by Robert Franz Arnold. Initially, Schönberg composed a version for singers and piano, and you will hear this during the show. It is a version that was first recorded on CD in 2010. It was until later in his career that Schönberg created the extended version for soloists, spoken voice, and symphony orchestra.
