The Palace of Nostalgia

sat 29 mar 2025 19:00 hrs

The virtuosic Jo Stafford. A Palace episode about one of the most versatile singers of the last century.

Jo Stafford had a crystal-clear vibrato-less voice, which enabled her like no other to perform the melancholic nostalgia repertoire that was in such demand during World War II.

At Tommy Dorsey’s band she sang in the background chorus for Frank Sinatra: the Pied Pipers, of which she became the most prominent voice.

She became the big money maker for Capitol, with hits such as  ‘Thank you for calling’.

At the same time, she became well-loved with her religious repertoire, plus she showed her comic side as Cinderella G. Stump in a silly duet with Red Ingle and revealed herself as the out of tune singing Darlene Edwards. She even manifested herself very early in the bebop movement.

When the youngsters of rock ‘n’roll swept her generation off the stage, she made several more jazz albums with celebrities as Ben Webster  Art van Damme before quitting.

A portrait of the virtuosic Jo Stafford.
