Today, another episode in our monthly series with guitar music from the last century. This time: tango, the famous Argentinian dance form and music, in which the guitar plays an important part.
The tango has its origins in various dances, like the Argentinian milonga and the Uruguayan candombe. These dances inspired composer Jorge Cardoso (1949) to write his Milonga for guitar and Máximo Diego Pujol (1957) to write his Aires candomberos for guitar and flute.
The key part of the programme consists of the Histoire du tango from Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992). He takes us through the history of the tango in four parts: from the beginning at the night clubs of Buenos Aires until modern day tango. It is written for guitar and flute, which are the original two instruments used in a tango.
