The seventh episode on Arthur Doyle, free jazz soul saxophonist from Birmingham, Alabama. You can instantly recognize his bluesy tone, overflowing with shouting and call-and-response.
As a teenager, he played in blues and rhythm ‘n’ bands. In 1968 he moved to New York, where he played with Sun Ra and Bill Dixon, hung out with Pharoah Sanders and Sonny Sharrock and was inspired by Milford Graves. He would play and record on a regular basis with Graves. Doyle often performed in the noise improv rock trio The Blue Humans, with Rudolph Grey and Beaver Harris.
In 1981 Doyle left for Paris, where he played with Alan Silva and the Celestial Communication Orchestra. After his return to New York in 1990, he toured a lot with Hamid Drake, Thurston Moore and Sunny Murray.
Tonight, we listen to music from Doyle together with percussionist Milford Graves and sound maker Hugh Glover from 1976, as well as solo recordings from 1992.
