Alexander Voormolen’s music is a joy. His life had a bad start, going from one children’s home to the next. He was an unhappy orphan, but later on when he was a student of Johan Wagenaar in The Hague, he left for Paris to meet with the big guys. Ravel was very impressed by his compositions. Back in The Hague, he managed to acquire quite a decent position in the Dutch music scene. His music is light and transparent and often refers to themes from his hometown The Hague, as for example the legendary Baron Hop – which refers to the city’s famous Hague toffees – and Louis Couperus. His Zijn exquisite his concerto for two oboes and orchestra should be played much more often.
