Musical Romanticism, explored by Pieter de Oude.
This week in Radio Romantica: the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. His second symphony is an impressive orchestral work, one he was very proud of himself and that’s celebrated by his fellow compatriots. The work was a success from the moment it premiered and might be his most performed composition.
We will listen to the Concertgebouw Orchestra performing this work, a recording on RCO Live label from 2005, conducted by Mariss Jansons. As overture, we play you the expressive ‘The Oceanides’, a tone poem for orchestra he wrote about the Greek water nymphs, performed by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Leif Segerstam.
