The Erevan Ensemble, a quintet of clarinet, goblet drum, bouzouki, electric guitar, and oud lute, illustrates a view of the transnational dynamics that have played such a significant role in the history of music over the past hundred years. Here we have a group of men, several of whom are simultaneously church deacons, music teachers, and ex-rockers—that is, general pillars of the community—raised in Michigan as third-generation descendants of immigrants from Western Armenia. Their music, in the kef (party) style, now represents an Armenian-American tradition characteristic mainly of the early twentieth century and now seemingly under threat from new, synthesizer-driven dance groups.

He recorded the song La Bohème in 1965 and, according to himself, it is about a painter who remembers his young life. His artistic years in which he was hungry, but happy. He was born in Paris in 1924 as Shahnour Varenagh Aznavourian, a son of Armenian immigrants. At a young age he entered the world of film, theatre and nightclubs, where he soon gained some recognition as a songwriter. Maurice Chevalier and Edith Piaf sang his works and encouraged the young man to start singing himself. The tide only turned in the late fifties. He then appeared in films and on stage alongside Frank Sinatra, among others. Charles died in 2018.
