Interview with a Dutch jazz musician

Jacq Palinckx was born in Tilburg in 1959 and has been professionally active as a composer and guitarist since 1981, and later as theatre director and cinematographer. He started in visual arts again in 2009, when he was younger he pursued a fine arts education. Film has started becoming a bigger part in his work since 2016. Between 1982 and 2007 he formed the group Palinckx with his brother. The group has played across the world and has generated quite a few projects, such as “Palinckx: The Psychedelic Years”. Jacq Palinckx also played in the groups of Peter van Bergen, Maarten Altena and Guus Janssen, and in ad hoc improvisation groups with Evan Parker, John Zorn, Keith Rowe and Joseph Bowie, among others. He has written music for the Mondriaankwartet, Asko-Ensemble, the David Kweksilber Bigband and recorder player Erik Bosgraaf, among others. He has toured in Italy, Switzerland, America, Canada, Russia, the Czech Republic and South Africa, among other countries. In the Netherlands, he has played at the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Groninger Jazz Marathon and the Jazz Cycle Tour. In 1992, he was awarded the podium prize by the Stichting Jazz in Nederland. As a guest with the trio 7O9O, he won the prize for the best performance at the Amsterdam Fringe festival in 2014. In 2015 he started his own YouTube channel. This represents an archive of his work and also a platform for his fascination with the relationship between image and sound. In Corona year 2020, he made the long Beethoven film ‘Veränderung’. At the moment, he plays in the Brabant collective VLEK.
