Interview with a Dutch jazz musician

Born in Amsterdam in 1963 pianist and composer Michiel Scheen performs in different so called fixed formations like the “Blue Lines Trio” with founder and bass player Raoul van der Weide and drummer George Hadow. As a duo with Tobias Delius and in the Jan Nijdam Quartet with Tobias Delius, Alan ‘Gunga’ Purves and Jan Nijdam. As a soloist he does not only play the piano the traditional way but goes further than just pressing keys.

From 1986 he played with the big boys of the Dutch world of jazz and with international celebrities such as Evan Parker, John Zorn, George Lewis, Anthony Braxton, Butch Morris and Radu Malfatti. As a pianist and composer he often worked together with theater groups such as FACT and Discordia and authors such as Remco Campert. He often received grants and commissions for compositions. In the nineties Michiel Scheen was on the board of the BIM, the Beroepsvereniging van Improviserende Musici.
