Irshad Khan (1963) grew up in Calcutta and currently lives in Canada. He belongs to the Imdadkhani gharana, a famous Indian school named after his great-great-grandfather Imdad Khan, a legendary 19th-century sitar player. As far back as the sixteenth century, Irshad’s ancestors were caused a furore at the Indian royal courts on sethar and the sitar that came from that, the multi-snared Indian strummed lute. Irshad’s family represents the oldest sitar school, all other sitar schools came forth from his family’s ancient gharana. Irshad’s family also gained fame in regards to the surbahar, the bass sitar, which was invented in the nineteenth century by Sahebdad Khan, father of Irshad’s great-great-grandfather Imdad Khan. In this programme, Irshad Khan discusses his renowned musical ancestors and his own career and music extensively. Irshad was a prodigy, gave big concerts at age seven and made his international debut at age thirteen, at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. Aside from traditional raga music and fusion by Irshad Khan, you can also hear music by Irshad’s father Imrat Khan and Irshad’s uncle Vilayat Khan, who is widely regarded as one of India’s greatest musicians of the twentieth century. In short, a captivating programme about Irshad Khan and his famous family of musicians.
