Composer: Joseph Haydn

Today: Haydn’s Symphony No.98, and parts from his Harmoniemesse H XXI:14

The message that Mozart has died casts a shadow over Haydn’s phenomenal success in London. He channels his grief by extensively citing Mozart in a symphony. This symphony came as a bombshell to the people of London. And ten years later, he does it again in his very last Mass, the Harmoniemesse. A brilliant work which is seldom heard.
