Folk magazine about the present and the past, from freak folk to minstrels. In roots music the expression ‘Like father like son’ (or mother, daughter, cousin, brother, sister) seems to be the rule rather than the exception, even up to three generations! It has become an entire series by now, which is a great opportunity for a summer special. We present you ‘It’s all in the Family’: three consecutive summer episodes of Folk It! with outstanding family tied folk.
Part 2.
Until roughly 50 years ago, it was common property: lettering on house fronts or invoices such as ‘Van Westen & Sons’, ‘Koolwijk Bros.’, or ‘Zuilen Family’. Companies in which the son took over the company’s responsibilities from his father or brothers who participated in an enterprise, sisters who cooperated or a mother who took on an important role in the company. In short, a family business. Due to increased educational opportunities and mobility, a changing job market and so on, both the need and the limitations of keeping or taking over work within the family have slowly disappeared.
But how about the profession of making music? We all know examples in pop music: Joe Stummer, Sting’s son. Or Jacob Dylan, as follower of his dad Bob, Julian as successor to John Lennon. Or even two sons (Adam and Oliver) who do the honours for dad (Rick Wakeman) in respectively Strawbs and the super formation Yes? And who remembers Paul McCartney’s singing brother Michael McGear? Or Tim and Jeff Buckley, of whom the latter not only followed his father’s musical footsteps but also tragically died prematurely. Sometimes it’s less obvious (father Ravi Shankar and daughter Nora Jones).
In the Netherlands we knew the twin brothers Gerard and Chris Koerts from the band Earth & Fire, and Jan and Henk Versteegen of the Shoes, also brothers. And what to think of the De Groot family with Boudewijn, Jim and Marcel…
What about all this in the genre with which Folk It! deals? We had the interesting idea to create a mini special about ‘family folk’ and were overwhelmed by the number. And our quest hasn’t even come to an end yet. In roots music the expression ‘Like father like son’ (or mother, daughter, cousin, brother, sister) seems to be the rule rather than the exception, even up to three generations! It has become an entire series by now, which is a great opportunity for a summer special. If you appreciate this series, be the Concertzender’s Friend. If you massively apply, you will enable our work and your own listening pleasure. If you do, we promise to present another episode of family tied folk for sure!
