Componist: Harold Schellinx
#516. Long live ookoi! A radiopiece by Harold Schellinx.
The radio-piece (bookoipera, tehoorspel) in five parts, ‘Long live ookoi!’ (Leve ookoi!), is a chronological time-capsule that covers the year 2017 in words, sounds, and notes extracted from a series of 52 weekly online conversations (each lasting precisely ten minutes and 24 seconds) that during that eventful year were live recorded via VoIP and podcast by the Dutch post-ULTRA, new media and speculative music duo the ookoi, as their ‘oki doki’ series (alles is goed, all is fine).
The bookoipera’s spine are the ‘un-words’ that sounded between the lines that were spoken. These include a couple of short musical phrases (the plucking of a toy guitar, singing, and a solitary piano tone) that the ‘bookoipera’ deconstructs, re-composes and exploits in quite some depth.
Two additional layers consist in the lists of names of people (politicians, artists, friends, family) that were pronounced, as well as of places (countries, cities, streets) that popped up in the course of the conversations.
This one hour triple helix of extracted sounds comes embedded in an electronic sound piece, composed around recordings made at the WORM sound studio in September 2023, that presages, echoes and develops parts of the contingent sonic and temporal events in the oki doki helix.
The piece was conceived, composed and realised in the first months of 2024 for the ookoi by Harold Schellinx. Full credits, more details and a ‘libretto’ can be found on the SoundBlog ( http://klangendum.soundblog.net , http://harsmedia.com ).
Composed & edited by Har$ (Hefferman) for the ookoi at WORM as a contribution to Lukas Simonis’ Klangendum series of experimental radiophonic emissions on the Dutch Concertzender radio, in 2024.
A Worm/Klangendum/Concertzender production.
