The Aurelia Saxophone Quartet plays Astor Piazzolla
The new programme series Tango Fusión by Joep à Campo is about exchanges and fusions of tango with other music cultures and performance practices. Between the 1950’s and the 1960’s the classic tango came to an end. The traditional tango was outstripped by the Anglo-Saxon pop music, but dried up as well because of a lack of renewal dynamics. However, the tango revived, as it appeared to be a source of inspiration to musicians from other traditions, and because tango musicians were able to connect with them. In short, Tango Fusión is tango since 1950, mixed with other music styles; be it classical, jazz, rock, electro, ethno or other world music.
This series opens with the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet, which existed between 1982 and 2017. This Dutch quartet, with a predominantly modern-classical repertoire, recorded a CD in 1994 which was titled Tango Nuevo, with compositions of Astor Piazzolla.
The then composition was: Johan van der Linden, soprano sax; André Arends, alto sax; Arno Bornkamp, tenor sax; and Willem van Merwijk, baritone sax. The quartet is reinforced with Gustavo Toker (bandoneon) and Juan Pablo Dobal (piano). The recordings were made in November 1994 in the Rode Hoed in Amsterdam.
