A tribute to musicians playing in a non-professional ensemble or orchestra.
Our main focus lies with music performed by professional musicians. Day in, day out, we work hard to record concerts from exceptionally talented professionals that have been schooled in this holy métier. All these recordings are brought to you through our radio station.
However, we do, now and then, record music from amateurs, more so in the early years when the Concertzender was still a city radio station in Amsterdam. The radio station could only be received in the capital, so listeners wanted to hear local music, no matter if it was from professional musicians or not. Sometimes this led to the discovery of a perfect jewel, like the concert of Shell Harmonie at the end of 1984. You wouldn’t expect musical talents hiding behind the walls of this top polluter, but appearances can be deceptive: this oil concern houses a lot of people that can not only wield a fuel pump nozzle but also a wind instrument!
The second concert is from 1997 and is a reflection of the trend at that time: pop choirs. More and more choirs and singing clubs popped up and, following barbershop, gospel and close harmony, there were now also groups arranging pop songs into a groovy musical experience.
Pop choirs turned out to be the 21st century-version of the community choir: a place where people can meet and sing together, where the repertoire is inviting and has a direct appeal. This doesn’t mean they don’t deliver high level performances. We’ll play you the finale of a pop choir singing competition – they sure deliver!
