From our archives: today we will play varied musical works from Schumann to Schnittke which were recorded on two concerts.
In this episode of Concertzender Live Archives, two concerts are highlighted. First we will listen to the twenty-year-old Anna Kravtchenko who gave a recital in the Main Hall of the Concertgebouw on 17 March 1996. She takes us on a journey to the romantic sounds of Schumann’s Fantasiestücke opus 12 and the virtuosity and playfulness of Liszt’s twelfth Hungarian Rhapsody. Anna Kravtchenko continues her performance with the melancholic October from The Seasons of Tchaikovsky, to end with the titanic Sonata No. 2 van Rachmaninoff. As if this has not been enough for the gifted twenty-year-old, she plays an encore into the bargain: Chopin’s Nocturne opus 9 No. 3.
The second concert was given by violinist Dick de Graaff and pianist Dido Keuning in venue the IJsbreker in Amsterdam. This concert took place on 18 February 1989. They started with works of Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky (in cooperation with Samuel Dushkin). Next, the modern Hommage A Paganini of Alfred Schnittke for violin solo was played, based on the well-known theme of Paganini from his Caprice opus 1 No. 24. The concert ended with the violin sonata opus 94 of Sergej Prokofiev. As long as the time at the end of this broadcast allows, you will hear Chopin’s fourth Ballade, played by Yanna Penson.
