A second episode all about the Dutch composer Johan Wagenaar (1862 -1941).
He was not just a composer, but also a music teacher, conductor and organist. In his life, he fulfilled many important positions in the music scene of Utrecht and The Hague. His parents came from two very different social classes, which made their marriage, according to societal norms at the time, quite impossible. This meant that the eight children essentially grew up without a father. Wagenaar came as a musical boy under the wing of the director of the Utrecht School of Music, where he received proper musical training. After his final exams, he was immediately appointed as piano and organ teacher at his school.
