In the episode of Madge-point on Sunday 6th April, compiler and presenter Geoffrey Madge compares various historical recordings of some Nocturnes by Frédéric Chopin.
He does not judge which performance is ‘the best’ but asks the listener to form their own opinion, for example, by listening to which recording sounds the most melodious. He also shows how an interpretation can evolve. He does this by playing three recordings of the Nocturne in E flat, Op.55 no. 2 by pianist Arthur Rubinstein (photo).
Other pianists who are featured in the broadcast include Alfred Cortot and Benno Moisewitsch.
