In September we gave a series of wonderful concerts to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Concertzender. Today and tomorrow, we will play you a wide selection from these concerts.
In today’s programme we will listen to two concerts of early music, from the programme at festival Muze van Zuid. The first concert is stacked with renaissance polyphony: breathtakingly beautiful multivoiced sacred music compositions. A mass of Orlando di Lasso forms the focal point, and then we hear penitential psalms by, for instance, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. The concert takes place in the aptly named Obrecht church, named after another renaissance composer, Jacob Obrecht.
Our second concert took place in the Vondel church in Amsterdam, named after one of the most famous Dutch playwrights and writers from the 16th century. It provided an excellent stage for the songs from the Dutch Golden Age, which the music company Camerata Trajectina has been tracing, reconstructing and performing for several decades now. The company was founded by musicologist Louis Grijp, who wanted the songs he studied to be brought to life again. The company’s work hasn’t only resulted in many released CDs, but also restored a repertoire that hadn’t been performed for hundreds of years. In this concert we hear the Camerata perform repertoire from many different centuries (among which the seventeenth century), and as a gesture to the audience, they included the not so obscure but very well-known songs from Adrian Valerius.
