Saxophonist Toon Roos on Wayne Shorter, who passed away on March 2, 2023:
The American saxophonist Wayne Shorter (1933 – passed away on March 2nd) became known in the late fifties as a member and ultimately as the primary composer of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. In the sixties, he joined forces with Herbie Hancock (piano), Ron Carter (bass), and Tony Williams (drums) as part of Miles Davis’ quintet, and in 1970 he co-founded the jazz-fusion band Weather Report. He recorded over 20 albums as a bandleader, and many of his compositions have become jazz standards. Shorter won 12 Grammy Awards. He was Down Beat’s annual winner for the jazz critics’ poll for soprano sax from 1970 to 1980, and for 18 consecutive years for the readers of Down-Beat.
