Trumpeter and composer Carl Saunders (1942)

Tonight we’ll focus on the American trumpeter, composer, and teacher Carl Saunders. Born in 1942 in Indianapolis, Saunders was introduced to the trumpet during his school years. He turned out to be a self-taught musician and learned to play the instrument without any formal lessons. After high school, he was able to join the Stan Kenton Orchestra. He was given the choice to wait for a spot in the trumpet section of the orchestra or to start working immediately as a mellophonist. He chose the latter. This allowed him to go on tour with the orchestra at the age of 19.

After a large number of collaborations in the 1970s and 1980s with, among others, Paul Anka, Frank Sinatra, and Bill Holman, Saunders has been releasing albums under his own name since the 1990s.
