Orient Express

fri 25 jun 2021 23:00 hrs

Traditional Instrumental music from Egypt/Turkey.

This episode of Orient Express dedicated to one of the most popular forms of Middle Eastern classical instrumental music. The Sama’i (Samaï or Saz Semaï in Turkish) is a composition that follows a particular 4 movements form and certain rhythm(s). The form was developed in the Ottoman Empire from the 18th century onwards. By the end  of the 19th century, the composers of Ottoman Istanbul have made the Samai the most important and popular form in all of the Middle East and the southeastern Mediterranean. A typical musical introduction to Wasla’s or the suites).

We will listen to some classical pieces performed by both Arab and Turkish ensembles. Hoping to show the diverse ways in which the same classical piece can be approached and also the heterophony esthetics that is typical of the old middle-eastern traditions.

The Composers include Tabnuri Cemil (Djeml) Bey, , Tatyos Efendi , and Ibrahim Al-Aryan.

The Samai is named after the maqam (the musical mode and the compnoist e.g. Samai Farahfaza (is of the mode Farahfaza) Tanburi bey (composed by Tanburi Bey).
