Indian classical music. A world of endlessly refined variety for connoisseurs, sonorous mumbo-jumbo for many others.
We hear this style of music in the Netherlands now and then. In the Amsterdam Tropenmuseum, it happened twice in 1999, and with some excellent musicians! In April, Budhaditya Mukherjee graced the museum with his visit. Mukherjee is renowned as one of the greatest sitar players of all time, not least for his perfectionism and fabulous technique.
Next to the serious Mukherjee is the more relaxed Hariprasad Chaurisia, who plays the bansuri (bamboo flute). Chaurasia became famous, especially in his own country, for his film music, but he has also mastered the more serious genres to perfection.
