Jazz, blues and nostalgia, by Sjaak Roodenburg. Our trump card, is folly!
Again, an insanely mad parody by Stan Freberg, this time on the tune of police series ‘Dragnet. We have got other kinds of ‘folly’ as well, like ‘April Fool’ by Eric Dolphy and ‘Foolin’ myself’ with Billie Holiday. Also, ‘The Dean of American Balladeers’ John Jacob Niles in his song ‘Go ‘way from my Window’, obscure French chansonnier Damia – the forerunner of Edith Piaf, who was known as ‘La Tragédienne de la chanson’ and at whose farewell performance, Jacques Brel provided the opening act -, belligerent sounds of Hawaiian icon Andy Iona and his Islanders, a ‘cool cat’ op een ‘hot tin roof’ by horn player John Graas, the Buddy Collette Quintet with guitarist Barney Kessel, the Dutch band of Dick Willebrandts with Nelly Verschuur, and of course attention for Chuck Berry. What was the Cocktail Trio doing with one of his songs? And attention for master pianist Vinnie Falcone, who has passed away, completing the circle with his and Frank Sinatra’s ’These Foolish Things’.
