Soundtracks of films all over the world. “Koyaanisqatsi” (USA, 1982).
‘Koyaanisqatsi is a film from 1982 by director Godfrey Reggio and exists mainly of slow motion photography of cities and landscapes of the United States. Remarkable is that the film contains neither dialogue nor any spoken words: it’s purely image and music. ‘Koyaanisqatsi’ in the language of the Hopi tribe means something like ‘life out of balance’ or ‘a state of life that calls for another way of living’. The film implies that this is what modern life is. ‘Koyaanisqatsi’ is the first film in the Qatsi trilogy, followed by Powaqqatsi and Naqoyqatsi. These films are from 1988 and 2002.
The soundtracks of these three films are all composed by Philip Glass. The soundtrack of ‘Koyaanisqatsi’ was released in 1983, after the film itself was released. Contrary to the fact that the amount of music was almost as long as the film, the soundtrack was only 46 minutes long. It only contained selections of the pieces from the film. In 1998, Philip Glass re-recorded the soundtrack but this time more elaborate. The music became so popular that Mr Glass toured around the world and gave live performances with his ensemble during the showing of the film.
